Best performance in The Omega Man has to be Anthony Zerbe, formerly a charismatic news commentator now charismatic leader of the Zombie pack. The Omega Man was groundbreaking at the time, but I'm not sure it has worn well with age. Still though the religious symbolism with Heston as a Christlike figure gets way too heavy handed at times. What might the human reaction be to something like what is depicted in The Omega Man. In the intervening time we've seen the AIDS pandemic and governments paralyzed much like the zombies here who have surrendered to their doom, saying it's the will of the Deity. Didn't mean something like this couldn't happen. Now as I write this we are going into 30 years after this event was supposed to have occurred. Unfortunately for humanity it was too late, but Heston vaccinated himself and now lives as both the hunter and hunted in a devastated Los Angeles filled with these albino vampire zombies who are those that have survived among the human race. Only one man is immune from it and it's Charlton Heston who was one of a team of scientists who developed an antidote. It's 1977 and the world has been devastated with a biological plague launched during a war between the Communist superpowers, Russia and China. An excellent and cool film that will please most viewers.

Sure, it isn't Shakespeare or amazingly artistic-just good old fun that is very re-watchable. This film is rare in that it's a remake of an earlier film AND it's actually better than the original! While not as good as Heston's greatest sci-fi films, PLANET OF THE APES and SOYLENT GREEN, it is wonderful fun. In addition, later in the film some hope for the redemption of mankind appears-thought you'll have to see the film for yourself to find out exactly what occurred.

There's a lot more to the movie than this-including a REASON for the plague that did this to the people and explained why he was immune (something forgotten in the earlier version of this film that starred Vincent Price). Seeing Heston with a machine gun mowing them down was indeed a guilty pleasure.

At night, the crazed zombies attack his home again and again, but since Heston would later become the president of the NRA, it wasn't surprising that he proceeded to blow the crap out of the intruders-and do it with great gusto and style. And after a long day of this, it's home-not for a Miller beer, but to hide out in his amazing fortress home. So during much of the film, cool Heston drives about town in his cool car-rooting for food or blowing apart the occasional zombie. Everyone else is either dead or a psychotic zombie that cannot come out during the daytime. The film is set in the near future and Charlton Heston seems to be the only person left on the planet.
